Pharaoh ant (Monomorium pharaonis)

Biology:

The female workers are only 1.5-2.5 mm long, amber yellow with dark-tipped abdomen. Pharaoh ant colonies normally have several queens. This species is very thermophilic and is found only in well-heated buildings, above all hospitals, bakeries, commercial kitchens, indoor pools, etc. The hidden nests and establishment of branch nests in masonry make control very difficult.

Damage:

Besides sweet foods, pharaoh ants eat mainly material that contains protein such as meat, eggs, cheese and blood. They transmit diseases, and are otherwise a nuisance, mainly in hospitals. Thanks to their small size, they are able to get into medical equipment, sterile packages and wound bandages.
